Contrary to popular belief, getting to Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve is fairly easy. Kota is close, and there’s no long, tiring drive to the forest. This guide is not a map lookup; our staff makes pickups almost weekly for guests travelling by road and rail.
Here is exactly how to get from Kota to Mukundara, whichever way you are arriving.
Distance and Travel Time from Kota
The distance between Mukundara Tiger Reserve and Kota city is approximately 20 to 22 kms as per the route from which you are coming for a safari. In normal situations, it is an easy drive of 30 to 45 minutes by road and is easily accessible for a safari in the morning or evening hours without an early night’s sleep the night before.
It is one of the best features of this short distance to explore the reserve. Mukundara is somewhat different than Ranthambore as it is a base from which you can visit the forest without suffering from any travel fatigue, unlike Ranthambore, which requires a longer stay in the jungle from either Jaipur or Sawai Madhopur.
Reaching Mukundara by Rail
Kota Junction is the railway station, and that is because most of our guests use it. It is located on one of the busiest rail corridors in India, and there are direct trains connecting Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. The train is often the quickest and easiest way to travel from any of these cities.
The safari gate is just over an hour’s drive from Kota Junction. Most rail travelers do not organize local transportation but rely on our team to provide pick-up and drop-off right from the station for their convenience. We request passengers to provide us with details of their train in advance so that we have someone waiting for them when they arrive at the station, particularly on early morning trains that are closely timed with a safari slot.
In case you are travelling by train to join the safari, opt for the train that arrives in Kota the night before the safari. It takes away the time pressure, and you get a cushion when the train is delayed, which is more often seen than we can imagine on Indian Railways.
Reaching Mukundara by Road
Kota connects well by road through NH52, one of the main national highways running through Rajasthan. Whether you are driving in from Jaipur, Bundi, Chittorgarh, or further afield, the highway network makes Kota an easy stop rather than a detour.
From Jaipur, the drive covers close to 250 km and typically takes four to five hours depending on traffic and stops along the way. From Bundi, it is a much shorter hop, usually under an hour, which makes combining a heritage visit with your safari straightforward. From Chittorgarh, expect roughly three hours on the road.
Once you are in Kota city itself, reaching the reserve is quick. Local roads lead directly to the safari zones, and our pick-up and drop service covers this final stretch for guests who would rather not navigate unfamiliar roads themselves, particularly useful for early morning safari starts when visibility and directions can be trickier.
Why We Recommend Pick and Drop Over Self-Drive
Most of our guests, especially first-time visitors, opt for our pick and drop facility rather than a rental car or self-arranged taxi. We have found this saves real time, particularly for guests catching a morning train and heading straight to an early safari slot with little room for delay.
It also means one less thing to plan on a trip that already involves permits, timing, and zone selection. Our drivers know the safari gate routes well, including which entry points get busier during peak season, so guests reach the reserve without the guesswork.
A Note on Air Travel
Kota does not currently have its own operational airport, though one is under construction. For now, the nearest airport is in Jaipur, roughly 250 km away. If you are flying in, plan for either a road transfer or a train connection from Jaipur to Kota rather than a direct flight into the city.
Most of our guests flying in from further away choose the Jaipur to Kota train connection, since it avoids the traffic variability of a long highway drive and gets you into Kota Junction, where our pick-up and drop-off can take over from there.
Planning Your Arrival Around Safari Timings
Safaris run in two daily shifts, morning and evening, so your arrival timing matters more than people expect. If you are catching an early morning safari, arriving in Kota the evening before gives you a comfortable buffer rather than racing off a train or a long drive straight into the reserve.
We generally suggest booking your travel to land in Kota by early evening if your safari is scheduled for the next morning. It gives you time to settle in, confirm pickup details with our team, and start the next day relaxed rather than rushed.
Why Trust This Guide
This guide comes directly from the team coordinating pickups and drop-offs for Mukundara safaris every week. We are not estimating travel times from a map. These are the routes, stations, and highways our guests actually use to reach the reserve, season after season.
